Here is something Tiger Woods said at the 2002 PGA Championship and has been a mantra, essentially, throughout his career:

"I take the same focus, the same approach to each and every major championship, and that is to peak and get my game mentally and physically ready for this one week. I try and do it four times a year."

It has been a formula that works for Woods. Everything he does throughout the year is geared around him peaking in all facets of his game and life for four seven-day stretches.

Which is why I don't think he's going to play in the British Open at Royal Liverpool in a little over a month.

Oh sure, he might be "able" to play in the British Open at Royal Liverpool in a little over a month but he won't be ready the way Tiger Woods likes to be ready for a major.

Here's how I would peg his odds of each of the following tournaments being his first one back.

Odds of Tiger Woods' first tournament back
Tournament Odds
British Open 10 percent
Bridgestone Invitational 40 percent
PGA Championship 20 percent
Ryder Cup 1 percent
Not at all 30 percent

If Woods doesn't play a tournament I seriously doubt he's going to be picked for the Ryder Cup team and I think his chances of not playing at all until next season are higher than most people probably think.

I also question whether or not he would play a major without at least some sort of warmup test before throwing his revamped back into a major test. Especially one with wacky weather and lengthy rough like a British Open.

It has to be Bridgestone, doesn't it?

He has won eight times there and it gives him an extra two weeks of preperation for competitive golf, plus it's not a major. And if he wants to play the PGA Championship that's the perfect warmup.
