Currently, teams can earn compensatory picks in the draft based on departing free agents. Free agents are no longer ranked as type A, B, or C. Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, any team who signs free agent who received a qualifying offer from his original team will forfeit a high draft pick. The departing free agent's original team will be awarded a compensatory pick in the supplemental first round.
