Celebrity power couple Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez have reportedly lost interest in becoming owners of the New York Mets, according to the New York Post. In an unsurprising development, part of the reason for this breakdown in talks reportedly happened because of stubbornness on the part of the Wilpons, the team's current owners.

The Wilpons are apparently reluctant to give up SportsNet New York (SNY), the Post reports, and the family legitimately believes they'll be able to sell the team without giving up the sports network. However, the shutdown of sports due to the coronavirus has lowered the value of the franchise, so anyone who wants to start making money back will likely want SNY to offset early losses.

Wayne Rothbaum, the billionaire that was working with the couple to get the team, wants the team at a discount -- something they simply weren't going to get. It also didn't help that Rothbaum wanted a lot more control of the team, per the Post.

"The Rothbaum thing soured fast," a source familiar with the J-Rod/Rothbaum relationship told The Post. "He was not their first choice, but he was the first to agree to next steps."

The saga of getting someone to buy the Mets has included a billionaire (Steve Cohen) who had to pay more than a billion dollars in penalties for insider trading, and a celebrity couple that includes someone who was one of New York's most hated athletes. The suitors can only get more interesting from here.
