Angels: Greinke will start Sunday against Tampa Bay

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Zack Greinke will stay on schedule and make his first start for the Angels on Sunday, manager Mike Scioscia said following the Angels' 3-1 win over the Rays Friday night.

The Angels were not sure before the game how they would set up their rotation with Greinke, leading to some speculation that they may wait and plug him into the rotation for Ervin Santana on Tuesday in Texas. Scioscia nixed that quickly following Friday's game.

"We have to win games," said Scioscia, whose Angels trimmed the Rangers' lead to four games in the AL West on Friday. "No matter who we're playing.

"There's too much baseball left. If it was the last week of the season there would be some things you'd look at."

But it isn't, so they're not. Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher spoke with Greinke briefly by telephone before Friday night's game, covering mostly some housekeeping topics. They said their hellos, the Angels obtained information on Greinke's bullpen routine, learned that he threw his regular between-starts bullpen on Thursday so he is ready to go on Sunday.

"It's much more important to keep to his routine," Scioscia said of plans to hand Greinke the ball Sunday rather than delay his start by a couple of days so he could face the Rangers. "He needs to get acclimated, get on his routine and get that started."
