Angels right-hander Ryan Madson took another step forward on Saturday as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery:

Madson, 32, had his elbow rebuilt one year from this coming Thursday, though he's battled through setbacks this spring. The Angels signed him to a one-year contract worth $3.25 million this past winter.

Before the injury, Madson was one of the best relievers in baseball. He pitched to a 146 ERA+ with a 9.6 K/9 in 191 innings from 2009-11 and saved 32 games in 34 chances with the 2011 Phillies. The Angels are using righty Ernesto Frieri as their closer in the meantime.
