Angels' Ryan Madson not pain-free, but 'inching closer' to return
Angels right-hander Ryan Madson is still not pain-free as he returns from Tommy John surgery, but he threw a bullpen session on Saturday and said he is 'inching closer' to a return.
Ryan Madson threw another bullpen today. Says he's not pain free, not 100 percent, but "inching closer."#Angels— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) April 6, 2013
Madson, 32, had his elbow rebuilt one year from this coming Thursday, though he's battled through setbacks this spring. The Angels signed him to a one-year contract worth $3.25 million this past winter.
Before the injury, Madson was one of the best relievers in baseball. He pitched to a 146 ERA+ with a 9.6 K/9 in 191 innings from 2009-11 and saved 32 games in 34 chances with the 2011 Phillies. The Angels are using righty Ernesto Frieri as their closer in the meantime.
