Angels to acquire Tony Campana, Joe Thatcher from D-backs
The Angels and Diamondbacks are reportedly close to swinging a deal that will send outfielder Tony Campana and lefty reliever Joe Thatcher to Anaheim.
The Angels have acquired outfielder Tony Campana and lefty reliever Joe Thatcher from the Diamondbacks, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. Our own Jon Heyman confirms the deal and adds that the D-backs are receiving two prospects in return: outfielder Zach Borenstein and right-hander Joey Krehbiel.
Thatcher, 32, gives the Angels a much-needed arm in the bullpen. This season, he's pitched to a 2.63 ERA in 24 innings, and over that span he's struck out 25 against just two unintentional walks. For his career, he owns an ERA+ of 115 across parts of eight seasons. Across those eight seasons, he's limited left-handed batters to a line of .221/.280/.341 while notching a K/BB ratio of 4.59 in platoon-advantaged situations.
As for Campana, the 28-year-old fly-catcher isn't much of a hitter (career OPS+ of 60), but he does have plenty of speed on the bases and the ability to man all three outfield positions.
On the Arizona side of things, Borenstein, age 23 and a former 23rd-rounder out of Eastern Illinois, owns a career slash line of .292/.363/.513 across parts of four minor-league seasons. Last season, he tallied 28 homers in 112 games for High-A Inland Empire. Baseball America ranked him as the Angels' ninth-best prospect coming into the season.
Krehbiel, meantime, has a 3.85 ERA and 2.83 K/BB ratio in 92 minor-league games, 88 of which have been relief appearances. The 21-year-old was a 12th-round choice in 2011.
