Another top draft prospect, UNLV's Erick Fedde, needs Tommy John
Another highly regarded college pitcher is set for Tommy John surgery. This time it's Erick Fedde of UNLV.
According to Aaron Fitt of Baseball America, UNLV right-hander Erick Fedde will require Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow. Fedde, a junior, was a potential top-10 selection in the upcoming June MLB draft. Mere days ago East Carolina right-hander Jeff Hoffman, another highly regarded draft-eligible arm, learned he would need Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately this seems in keeping with what's been going in the majors this season, as any number of pitchers have been prescribed reconstructive elbow surgery.
As our own Jon Heyman recently wrote, Hoffman still has a good outlook insofar as the upcoming draft is concerned. As for Fedde, he's also likely still going to be a high selection on draft day, but there's no doubt that this development will cost him at least a few slots and some signing-bonus money.
Fedde acknowledged the news on Twitter, and if the following tweet is any guide, then he has the right attitude moving forward:
Words can't describe how supportive and amazing my friends, family, and teammates have been through this process! So much love for you guys!— Fedde (@ErickFedde) May 10, 2014
