A's activate Anderson, option Milone, tab Colon to start Thursday
The second-place Athletics have made a pair of related roster moves that will shake up the pitching staff.
Anderson hasn't pitched since April 29 because of a stress fracture in his right foot. With Bartolo Colon set to come off the DL and start Thursday for Oakland against fellow All-Star Max Scherzer (source: Susan Slusser on Twitter), Anderson will likely spend at least a few days in the bullpen. Anderson, age 25, has pitched to a 3.74 ERA (111 ERA+) in 74 career appearances, 73 of which have been starts.
The return of Colon, of course, is welcome news for the contending A's. This season, the 40-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.97 ERA in 154 1/3 innings and a majors-leading three shutouts. He's also logged quality starts in 19 of 24 outings.
As for Milone (4.28 ERA, 89 ERA+ in 2013, his demotion comes the day after he defeated Justin Verlander and the Tigers. Milone, however, has averaged less than five innings over his last three starts.
