Astros president and CEO George Postolos has tendered his resignation, the team announced on Monday. Postolos had served in his role since November 2011 and had been a key player in Jim Crane's acquisition of the franchise from former owner Drayton McLane.

Postolos released the following statement:

“I am very proud of what Jim accomplished with my help -- acquiring a major league franchise with a strong and diverse ownership group, developing and implementing a good plan for the team’s future, and assembling a first rate management team. I look forward to helping other investors pursue their objectives in sports knowing that Jim and the Astros organization are off to a great start and well positioned for future success.”

Postolos, as he suggests, will return to his consulting practice.

As is always the case with such matters, there's more to the story.'s Danny Knobler noted on Twitter that Postolos wasn't terribly popular in some corners of the organization. As well, Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle reminds us that as recently as February, Postolos, Crane and GM Jeff Luhnow all insisted they were in agreement on the direction of the franchise, which, of course, is in the early stages of a deep rebuild. That statement would seem to no longer hold true, to say the least.

“We appreciate George’s hard work in the acquisition of the Astros and his commitment to the organization,” Crane said in a statement. “I’d also like to personally thank him for the assistance that he has provided to me over the last several years and wish him the best of luck in the future.”
