Byron Buxton may begin Double-A season on the disabled list
Twins top prospect -- and the top prospect in baseball -- Byron Buxton has a wrist injury and may begin the Double-A season on the disabled list.
We generally wouldn't post an update in this space when a player headed to Double-A might begin the season on the disabled list, but Byron Buxton isn't exactly an ordinary minor-leaguer.
The Twins center fielder is the consensus top prospect in baseball. He's also currently dealing with a wrist issue and sounds destined to miss the beginning of the season for the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats. Per a startribune.com report, here's the situation:
The 20-year-old outfielder, projected to open the season with Class AA New Britain, injured his wrist while diving for a fly ball 10 days ago, and has not played since. He still feels soreness in the wrist when he swings a bat, though an MRI taken Saturday revealed no structural damage to the wrist.
He has been diagnosed with a sprain of the pisotriquetral joint, which can be slow to heal. Buxton will likely be sidelined for another couple of weeks, Twins doctors believe, meaning he would miss the start of the Eastern League season next Thursday.
Buxton hit .334/.424/.520 with 19 doubles, 18 triples, 12 homers, 77 RBI, 109 runs and 55 steals with stellar defense last season between Class A Cedar Rapids and High-A Fort Myers. He was the Twins' first-rounder (second overall behind Carlos Correa) in the 2012 draft out of high school.
It's been a rough spring for the Twins' top prospects, as the consensus second-best prospect, slugger Miguel Sano, had to undergo Tommy John surgery.
