Cardinals are looking closely at free agent pitcher Mike Leake

NASHVILLE -- With Lance Lynn out for the season (Tommy John surgery) and John Lackey headed to the Cubs, the Cardinals are looking closely at free agent pitcher Mike Leake . Leake appears to be St. Louis' next target. The Cardinals tried hard for David Price (he received a reported $180 million offer), Jeff Samardzija and Lackey. Leake is ranked 14th in my list of top 50 free agents, ranked by dollars and projections. San Francisco, Arizona and other teams still remain interested in Leake.

With Price, Greinke, Samardzija, Lackey and Marco Estrada out of the market, Leake, Johnny Cueto, Scott Kazmir, Wei-Yin Chen, Hisashi Iwakuma, Yovani Gallardo are among the top pitchers left on the market. Leake is reliable, durable and athletic, so he should do well even if he's a fallback choice for some.
