Cardinals place Jaime Garcia on DL

The Cardinals have placed left-hander Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. St. Louis skipped Garcia in the rotation last week, hoping the rest would take care of his problems, but he then lasted just two innings on Tuesday after giving up six run on five hits and two walks.
The team called up right-handed reliever Fernando Salas from Triple-A to take Garcia's spot on the roster. Salas appeared in 18 games for the Cardinals this season, putting up a 6.32 ERA in 15 2/3 innings.
Garcia returned to St. Louis on Wednesday to have doctors look at not just his shoulder but also his elbow and hip.
Garcia, 25, has 4.48 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings this season. He had Tommy John surgery in 2009 but returned to be a highly useful member of the rotation in 2010 and 2011.
