Cardinals place Jake Westbrook on disabled list
A lower back strain has landed struggling Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook on the DL.
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed starting pitcher Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list due to a lower back strain, the club announced Friday afternoon. As a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez has gotten the call from Triple-A Memphis.
The Cardinals have announced that lefty Tyler Lyons will take Westbrook's place in the rotation while Martinez is put in the bullpen.
Westbrook, 35, is 7-8 with a 4.49 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and has more walks (49) than strikeouts (43) this season. He's been awful of late, going 0-4 with a 9.69 ERA in his last five appearances.
Lyons is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA this season.
Martinez, 21, has a 6.19 ERA in 11 games this season for the Cardinals. The highly touted prospect has a 2.66 ERA in 61 innings for Memphis this season.
