Cardinals to place Michael Wacha, Jaime Garcia on DL
Cardinals starting pitchers Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia are both set to be placed on the disabled list due to shoulder injuries.
The Cardinals are set to place 40 percent of their starting rotation on the disabled list with shoulder injuries. Both Michael Wacha and Jaime Garcia are headed there, the Cardinals told reporters after Sunday's game (including Jenifer Langosch).
Carlos Martinez, who got the start Sunday in Wacha's place, will remain in the rotation. The Cardinals, then, still need to add another starter. Joe Kelly remains on the disabled list, so Tyler Lyons seems like a logical choice.
Wacha, 22, is 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 15 starts this season. The Cardinals were already planning on limiting his workload moving forward, but a shoulder injury has to be troubling in the youngster.
Garcia, 27, is 3-1 with a 4.12 ERA in seven starts this season. He missed all but nine starts last season and had to undergo surgery to repair a partially torn labrum and rotator cuff in his left shoulder. Given his history (two shoulder surgeries), seeing another shoulder injury is concerning.
