Cubs prospect Kris Bryant has 38 homers this season
Will Kris Bryant be the next Cubs phenom to make a splash on the North Side?
That well-struck baseball turned out to be Bryant's 38th homer of the season (!) -- a mark that ties him with Rangers farmhand Joey Gallo (who caught our eye at the Futures Game) for the minor-league lead.
Bryant, age 22, is now batting .341/.448/.692 this season at the Double- and Triple-A levels. For his career, he owns a line of .340/.435/.691 across parts of two minor-league seasons. Now check out Bryant's 2014 spray chart courtesy of @darenw ...
That, as they say, is power to all fields.
Obviously, the second overall pick of the 2013 draft has nothing left to prove in the minors, but he doesn't appear to be in line for a call-up right away. In fact, it's been suggested that Bryant won't see the bigs until early 2015. While he may be in line for a position switch (third base to right field), I'd say 40 bombs in the high minors (give him a week or so) should at the very least yield a September promotion. We'll find out soon enough.
