Dave Martinez is being hired as Cubs bench coach, joining his old friend Joe Maddon, sources said Thursday.

The Rays let Martinez seek a new job after he failed to make the finals of their manager derby that is now down to Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu and Indians bench coach Kevin Cash after Raul Ibanez bowed out due to family reasons.

Martinez was Maddon's longtime bench coach in Tampa, where they perenially outstripped expectations for years. Maddon used an out clause in his contract to take the managing job with the Cubs, and the speculation since was that Martinez might join him.

Martinez interviewed last offseason for the Cubs' managing job that went to Rick Renteria, who was fired after one year only because Maddon became available.

Martinez came up as an outfielder with the Cubs in 1986 and played there until 1988, then came back to play again for the Cubs in 2000. So this will be his third stint as a Cub.

Brandon Hyde was to be the bench coach for the Cubs, who had a full staff, and will now readjust.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times first said Martinez was Chicago bound.
