Diamondbacks could trade Kennedy to free up money for Peavy
The Diamondbacks have explored the possibility of trading Ian Kennedy, with the idea of freeing up money to pursue a Jake Peavy trade.
Kennedy isn't having a great year, but the Diamondbacks' main interest in trading him would be to free up enough money to make a trade for Jake Peavy more practical. Kennedy makes $4.265 million this year. Peavy makes $14.5 million, with another $14.5 million due next year.
Peavy has a history with Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers, while Kennedy has history with both Angels GM Jerry Dipoto and Padres GM Josh Byrnes. The Diamondbacks would be looking for prospects in return for Kennedy.
The talks with the Padres were first reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
While neither the Angels nor the Padres are in contention this year, both have been looking to upgrade their starting pitching for the future. The 28-year-old Kennedy, a Southern California native who pitched at USC, would be under contract through 2015.
