Giants place Pablo Sandoval on disabled list with foot injury
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is on the DL with a foot strain. Could his weight be to blame?
The Giants have placed third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left foot. As Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area tweets, manager Bruce Bochy says Sandoval does not have a fracture and might be ready to come off the DL as soon as he's eligible.
Sandoval, 26, is batting .289/.326/.427 with eight homers in 57 games. For his career, the 2012 World Series MVP owns an OPS+ of 127 to go with 84 home runs and 146 doubles. Joaquin Arias is likely to be the Giants' regular third baseman during Sandoval's absence.
Sandoval's latest injury has again raised concerns about the excess weight he's carrying around. On that front, Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News quotes Bochy as saying Sandoval will use his time on the DL to focus on shedding pounds. Of course, how much can really accomplish to that end in roughly two weeks?
I've said this before, but absent some kind of glandular/hormonal disorder, there's no excuse for a professional athlete who's tasked with manning a fairly important defensive position to be in the kind of shape that Sandoval is in. It's past time for Sandoval to address the underlying causes.
