Giants left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt is set to open the season on the disabled list after spraining the MCL in his right knee. Giants manager Bruce Bochy informed the media of the issue after Affeldt's outing Wednesday night.

“He felt it during the game,” Bochy said (mercurynews.com). “He didn’t have his (knee) brace on.”

Affeldt, 34, managed only 30 appearances last season -- after averaging 68 appearances per season in the previous six seasons -- due to groin and abdominal issues, leading to sports hernia surgery in September. When he did take the hill, Affeldt had a 3.74 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 21 strikeouts against 17 walks. Opposing lefties only managed a .196/.292/.232 line against him.

Even with Affeldt down to start the year, the Giants still have Javier Lopez and David Huff from the left side in their bullpen.
