GIF: Cardinals take back the lead in Game 2 on defensive miscue
A bad throw by Craig Breslow allowed the Cardinals to take back the lead in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series.
The Red Sox grabbed a 2-1 lead on a David Ortiz sixth inning two-run homer in Game 2 of the World Series on Thursday night, but the Cardinals responded with three runs of their own in the next half-inning. It was all set up by walks, most notably a leadoff walk by David Freese and a walk to load the bases by Daniel Descalso.
Once the bases were loaded with one out -- there was a big double steal mixed in there -- leadoff man extraordinaire Matt Carpenter took care of the rest. Well, he had some help from the Red Sox. Take a look:
The tying run scored rather easily on the sac fly, the go-ahead run even easier on Craig Breslow's throwing error. His throw to third base wound up down the left field line. Here is the reaction from the two benches:
The next batter, Carlos Beltran, followed with a single to plate a big insurance run with two outs. I have no idea why Boston pitched to him with a man in scoring position and a base open.
So far this series, the two defenses have not exactly impressed. The Cardinals were a mess early in Game 1 and the Red Sox followed suit late in Game 2.
