GIF: Dan Uggla whiffs throw, Braves still throw Denard Span out
After an error, Braves second baseman Dan Uggla went to throw the ball back to the infield. Only he botched it and the ball went backward.
The Nationals-Braves doubleheader has been the source of some serious drama Tuesday. At the end of Game 1, the Nationals turned in perhaps the most unlikely victory of the season. In the nightcap, Denard Span extended his hitting streak to an MLB-long -- for this season -- 28 games.
In between, one of the funnier plays of 2013 happened.
The play-by-play log doesn't do it justice. Here's what that says:
Denard Span :Ball, Foul, Strike looking, Foul, Span reached on fielder's choice to first, Roark out at second, Span to second on 1st baseman Simmons throwing error, Span out at home.
What that doesn't show is Dan Uggla's whiff of a throw attempt:
Actually, can we even call it a whiff? He threw it backward.
Once Uggla got it right, his relay throw to Freddie Freeman led to Span being thrown out at home on a 3-6-4-3-2 double play. Or should it be 3-6-4-4-3-2? Regardless, it led to this sad Denard Span face:
All's well that ends well for Washington, though, as they won 4-0 and swept the doubleheader. They've now won 27 of their last 37.
