GIF: Matt Holliday gives Cardinals a 4-2 lead in World Series Game 3

After the Cardinals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in World Series Game 3, the Red Sox clawed their way back and knotted the game at two in the sixth.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh, when Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran opened the inning with an infield single and a hit-by-pitch. It appeared as though Carpenter would have beaten the throw from Xander Bogaerts even if first baseman du jour David Ortiz had successfully scooped it out of the dirt. That brought Matt Holliday to the plate to with two on and no outs:

The double scored both Carpenter and Beltran to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead with six outs to go. Two things about the hit:

  1. That wasn't even a bad pitch by Junichi Tazawa. Holliday dug a splitter out of the dirt.
  2. Will Middlebrooks almost stopped the ball on the dive at third. Game of inches, man.

Holliday, who singled in the first inning, has driven in three of the four St. Louis runs. He is now 5-for-12 (.417) with a double, a triple, a home run and four runs driven in in the Fall Classic.
