Happy Anniversary: New York Yankee Billy Crystal
Six years ago today, comedian Billy Crystal suited up for the Yankees and took an at-bat in a spring training game. He struck out.
On this date in 2008, the Yankees signed comedian Billy Crystal to a one-day contract and gave him an at-bat in a spring training. It was a 60th birthday gift for Crystal, who wore No. 60 for the game.
Crystal started at DH and led off the game -- he joked DH stood for "designated Hebrew" -- striking out on six pitches against then-Pirates left-hander Paul Maholm. He did manage to foul a pitch off and work the count full. Here is Crystal talking about the experience:
"It was surreal. It was great," said Crystal to reporters after the game (Reuters). "I thought, I can't believe this is really happening. I wish I was coming back tomorrow."
And with that, happy birthday to Billy Crystal, who turns 66 tomorrow.
