Indians activate Nick Swisher from DL, place Jason Giambi on it
Nick Swisher has recovered from his knee injury and been activated from the DL by the Indians.
Prior to Thursday's game in Boston, the Indians have activated first baseman Nick Swisher from the disabled list, the club has announced. As a corresponding move, DH/pinch-hitter Jason Giambi has been placed on the 15-day DL due to left knee inflammation.
Swisher, 33, has been on the DL since May 27 due to a hyperextension in his left knee. On the season, the switch hitter has authored a line of .211/.312/.319 (82 OPS+) with 11 doubles, three homers and 19 RBI.
Swisher is in the lineup Thursday night at DH, batting seventh. Carlos Santana is playing first base.
Giambi, 43, is hitting just .128/.212/.277 (39 OPS+) with two homers and five RBI in 47 at-bats this season. With the regular starters all now healthy and Lonnie Chisenhall in the midst of a breakout season, it doesn't seem that Giambi has a ton of value left between the lines. Due to his clubhouse presence that has been widely praised by those on and around the team, though, it seems unlikely they'd cut bait without doing something like hiring him on as a coach.
