The Rangers have hired former catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez to be a special assistant to general manager Jon Daniels, the club announced Thursday.
According to a press release, Rodriguez "will assist the Rangers baseball operations group in a number of areas, including amateur, professional, and international scouting, player instruction on the major and minor league level, and talent evaluation. He will also be involved in community and marketing endeavors on behalf of the club."
Rodriguez, 41, made his major-league debut in 1991 with the Rangers as a 19-year-old. He spent 13 seasons with Texas, racking up 11 All-Star spots, 10 Gold Gloves, six Silver Sluggers and an MVP in his time in Arlington.
The career Rangers franchise leaderboard is dotted with Rodriguez's name. He ranks seventh in batting average, eighth in slugging percentage, ninth in OPS, fourth in runs, second in hits, second in doubles, fourth in triples, fourth in home runs, fourth in RBI and first in wins above replacement among position players.
Only Michael Young, Rafeal Palmeiro and Jim Sundberg have ever appeared in more games for the Rangers.
