Joe Mauer has started increasing his workouts after suffering a concussion two weeks ago, Twins GM Terry Ryan confirmed to Rhett Bollinger of The team's franchise player ramped up exercises on Friday and is expected to hit off a tee on Saturday.

Mauer, 30, landed on the 7-day concussion DL on August 20 after taking a few too many foul balls to the face mask. He stayed in the game but felt some dizziness during batting practice the following day. In 113 games before the injury, Mauer hit a stellar .324/.404/.476 (142 OPS+) with 11 home runs.

The Twins know firsthand how devastating concussions can be. Corey Koskie's career was derailed by them about a decade ago, and more recently they've taken a toll on Justin Morneau. Brain injuries are always serious and it's very good news that Mauer is feeling better.

Manager Ron Gardenhire recently said the team could consider moving Mauer out from behind the plate in an effort to keep him healthy going forward. He is owed roughly $115 million through the end of 2018.
