Mere days after being demoted to Triple-A by the Mariners, Jesus Montero is facing knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, reports Greg Johns of Montero, who's in the midst of transitioning from catcher to first base, was given the diagnosis on Saturday. He'll undergo the procedure next week.

Acquired from the Yankees as part of the Michael Pineda deal, the 23-year-old Montero was once regarded as one of the top prospects in all of baseball. However, his defensive struggles have forced him to a less demanding position, and he's managed a major-league batting line of just .258/.303/.396 across parts of three seasons. This year, Montero's production slipped to .208/.264/.327.
