The Mariners this past offseason went through the motions of a contending team, but they've cinched their fourth-straight losing season and may wind up with 90 or more losses. As such, there's been some uncertainty surrounding the status of GM Jack Zduriencik, who's wrapping up his fifth season on the job.

Well, wonder no more, as team president Chuck Armstrong tells Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times that "Jack Z" will be back the 2014 season. Baker writes:

Armstrong declined to go into detail on how long Zduriencik has been retained for, citing club policy. Club sources have indicated Zduriencik will be here on a short-term deal.

Zduriencik said in an interview soon after that he’s pleased to be staying on beyond this year. Zduriencik declined to indicate how long he’s known the Mariners are definitely letting him fulfill his contract beyond this year.

While the results on the field have been disappointing during Zduriencik's tenure -- only one winning season on his watch -- the farm system and talent base at the major-league level have been drastically improved. In that sense, Zduriencik deserves the opportunity to see that young talent sink or swim at the highest level. To that end, he's getting at least another year.
