Latos, who has been on the disabled list with knee inflammation since May 23, enjoyed an encouraging performance in Triple-A, prompting manager Dan Jennings to put the ball in his hand's this weekend.
"He felt strong, his [velocity] certainly indicated that," Jennings said. "He had some of the best, if not the best, velocity we've seen all year. [Pitching coach] Chuck [Hernandez] and I called the Triple-A pitching coach, John Duffy, just to get his assessment of it."
Latos (1-4) has a 6.12 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 16 walks in 42 2/3 innings this season.
