Marlins, White Sox, Red Sox, maybe Cubs and more in Masterson derby
Justin Masterson is looking for a short-term deal after his injury plagued 2014 season.
SAN DIEGO -- Free-agent pitcher Justin Masterson, looking for a big bounce-back year, has met with the Red Sox and has meetings set up here at the winter meetings with the Marlins, White Sox and possibly Cubs.
Masterson met with Boston in his hometown of Indianapolis on Saturday.
Masterson broke into the big leagues with the Red Sox and he is very familiar with Cubs bosses Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer from their days in Boston. The Cubs just agreed to a deal with Jason Hammel for $20 million over two years and are pursuing Jon Lester.
The Royals, Giants, Twins and several other teams have shown interest in Masterson, a pitcher who could be a bargain. He is back to full health now, but after his rough injury-plagued 2014 season, he's likely to sign a one- or two-year deal. Before last season, Masterson was the Indians' ace.
