MLB injury, news and rumors roundup for May 8
It's time for our nightly roundup all of the MLB news, rumors and injury updates from the day that was.
We saw a hitting streak extend to 28 games Thursday while someone else now has an on-base streak of 36 games. Otherwise it was a pretty run-of-the-mill day of fun baseball. Let's get to our nightly roundup to conclude the day.
Blue Jays: Adam Lind was activated from the DL and hit a two-run homer while adding a third RBI. Right-handed pitcher Chad Jenkins was optioned to Triple-A to make room.
Padres: Xavier Nady was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso (Jeff Sanders).
Phillies: Freddy Galvis has been optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. A corresponding roster move won't be made until Friday (Todd Zolecki).
Rangers: They called up prospect Rougned Odor to take over at second. He went 0-for-4 in a Rangers win.
Astros: Scott Feldman will be activated from the DL in order to start Friday's game against the Orioles (MLB.com).
Nationals: Starting pitcher Doug Fister will make his season debut Friday. Also, Adam LaRoche is dealing with a strained quad (MLB.com).
Orioles: Catcher Matt Wieters is dealing with an arm injury and can't throw, probably for a while. He can, however, hit. So he was the DH Thursday, going 1-for-4.
Phillies: Jimmy Rollins (groin) was the DH in each of the past two games and is day to day in terms of when he can return to playing defense (MLB.com).
Reds: Aroldis Chapman's minor-league rehab assignment isn't going well.
Rockies: Justin Morneau was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to a stiff neck (MLB.com).
Royals: Omar Infante was out Wednesday and Thursday and is expected to miss Friday, too, due to a sore back (MLB.com).
Twins: Joe Mauer (back spasms) believes he can return to the lineup at some point this weekend (MLB.com). Also, the club announced that outfielder Sam Fuld was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. As a corresponding move, infielder Eduardo Nunez was called up from Triple-A.
White Sox: Chris Sale (flexor muscle strain) will throw a bullpen session Saturday while Adam Eaton (hamstring) is progressing but still has no set return timetable (MLB.com). Also, Jose Abreu is playing through an ankle injury and had to have treatment after the game Thursday (Scott Merkin).
Jeff Hoffman: The likely first-rounder is going to have Tommy John surgery, which knocks him down draft boards, but he could still go in the top 15.
Matt Treanor: The former MLB catcher retired (MiLB.com).
Astros: Collin McHugh has earned the right to remain in the rotation, despite the return of Feldman (MLB.com).
Giants: The club and closer Sergio Romo have decided to table contract extension talks until after the season.
Yankees: They're set to retire Joe Torre's number six, meaning they are pretty much done with single-digit numbers.
