We are at the one-quarter mark of the 2014 season right now. Hard to believe, no? Still feels like the season just started. Here is a recap of Saturday's baseball news from around the league.


OF Daniel Carbonell: The Yankees and Mariners are two of five finalists for the free agent Cuban outfielder. The Twins attended his most recent showcase as well. (Fox Sports, 1500 ESPN)

Astros: Signed RHP Kyle Farnsworth and added him to their bullpen. He can earn more than $1 million through incentives.

Cardinals: Close to a minor league contract with LHP Pedro Feliciano. (MLB Daily Dish)

Diamondbacks: Named Tony La Russa their new Chief Baseball Officer. He will oversee the baseball operations department and determine if changes are needed.

Rays: Placed OF Desmond Jennings on the bereavement list, the team announced. OF Kevin Kiermaier was called up in a corresponding move.

Tigers: Released both LHP Nate Robertson and RHP Jhan Martinez from their Triple-A affiliate. (


Brewers: OF Carlos Gomez was scratched from Saturday's lineup with lower back tightness and is day-to-day, the team announced.

Cubs: OF Ryan Sweeney (hamstring) has suffered a setback and will not return later this month as expected. (

Diamondbacks: 2B Aaron Hill was scratched from Saturday's lineup with a sore shoulder and is day-to-day, the team announced.

Giants: OF Angel Pagan has a sore shoulder after landing on it while making a diving catch. He finished the game but will be checked out Sunday. (CSN Bay Area)

Indians: DH Jason Giambi (calf) is expected to be activated off the DL on Tuesday. (

Mariners: LHP James Paxton (lat) threw two innings in a simulated game and figures to stretch it out to three or four innings sometime next week ( ... RHP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) threw a 55-pitch bullpen session without issue. The next step is a simulated game next week. (

Nationals: LHP Gio Gonzalez will have precautionary tests -- including an MRI -- on his left arm Sunday ... 1B Adam LaRoche (quad) tried running on Saturday and felt no soreness. (MASN Sports)

Phillies: RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) pitched in his first minor league rehab game on Friday ... OF Ben Revere is still out of the lineup due to an illness, the team announced.

Pirates: RHP Jason Grilli (oblique) threw a simulated game and felt fine. He could begin a minor league rehab assignment soon (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) ... RHP Stolmy Pimentel (shoulder) threw a 28-pitch bullpen session and will do the same on Monday. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Rangers: 1B Prince Fielder received an injection for a herniated disc in his neck and will be sidelined a few days. His consecutive games played streak ended at 547 ... X-rays came back negative after RHP Alexi Ogando was hit in the hand by a comebacker. He escaped with just a bruise. (Fort Worth Star Telegram)

Rays: RHP Alex Cobb (oblique) threw five scoreless innings at High Class-A in his first minor league rehab start ... C Ryan Hanigan has tightness in his hamstring and is day-to-day. (Tampa Bay Times)

Reds: OF Jay Bruce (knee) took batting practice again and was able to shag fly balls during batting practice. (Cincinnati Enquirer)

Red Sox: Placed 3B Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day DL with a fractured finger.

Royals: 2B Omar Infante (back) has yet to resume baseball activities and is unlikely to be ready when his DL stint expires on Thursday. (Kansas City Star)

White Sox: 1B Jose Abreu may sit on Sunday to rest his sore ankle. He's had discomfort for about a week. (

Yankees: OF Jacoby Ellsbury was scratched from Saturday's lineup with flu-like symptoms, the team announced. He is day-to-day ... LHP CC Sabathia (knee) is still on crutches and there is no timetable for his return (Wall Street Journal) ... RHP Michael Pineda (shoulder) will throw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Sunday. All-Star Game: Red Sox manager John Farrell will invite Indians manager Terry Francona and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire to be on the AL team's coaching staff.

Marlins: Jose Fernandez's attorney said being hit by a line drive in his second to last start led to mechanical changes and contributed to his client's torn elbow ligament.
