The Nationals are adding a fifth member to their award-winning Presidents' Race. Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post reports the team will announce the addition of William Howard Taft to the race at Nats Fest on Saturday afternoon.
“Teddy has handpicked the next president for the Presidents’ Race,” said Nationals COO Andy Feffer, referring to the racing version of Theodore Roosevelt. “There was a great amount of banter and discussion back and forth, but Teddy won out with his recommendation.”
Taft, the nation's 27th president, will be referred to as "Bill" for racing purposes. He has several ties to baseball, which include throwing out the first-ever ceremonial first pitch back in 1910. Taft is also widely credited with starting the seventh-inning stretch, though that was said to be an accident.
Teddy, George Washington ("George"), Abraham Lincoln ("Abe"), and Thomas Jefferson ("Tom") have been the four racers since the event started in 2006. For years the gimmick was that Teddy would never win the race despite head starts and all sorts of other advantages, but he broke his 525-race losing streak on the final day of the 2012 regular season.
