Rangers pitcher Neftali Feliz played catch on Friday for the first time since undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery last year, according to Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest.
Feliz's last appearance in 2012 came on May 18, after which he was shut down with what was initially said to be elbow inflammation. He ended up having surgery on Aug. 1 to repair a torn ulnar-collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. Given a typical recovery timetable, expect Feliz to miss more than half of the 2013 season and possibly return for only about six weeks.
Feliz, 24, was among the better closers in baseball for the 2010 and 2011 seasons, but the Rangers decided to put his electric arm in the starting rotation last season. He went 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 37 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings. The Rangers were 5-2 in his seven starts.
