On a night in which the Orioles already bumped up top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy to Double-A, they've now announced that they'll call up top position prospect Manny Machado in time for Thursday night's game against the Royals.
According to Matt Snyder's composite rankings, the 20-year-old shortstop and third-overall pick of the 2010 draft entered the season as the seventh-ranked prospect in all of baseball. After batting .266/.352/.438 (and .275/.365/.505 since the break) at Double-A Bowie despite being much younger than his peer group, he's done nothing to diminish his standing. Machado entered play on Wednesday with a career slash line of .263/.343/.428 in 218 minor-league games.
Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus reports that Machado is likely to see regular duty at third base for the time being, although the organization still sees him as the shortstop of the future.
