Pitcher David Buchanan had the worst start for a Phillies pitcher in 68 years, Tuesday against Arizona.
Buchanan became the first Phillies pitcher to give up 11 earned runs in a start since Al Jurisch in 1947.
Buchanan has a claim to an even worse outing than Jurisch, however, since he gave up all 11 runs in one inning. Buchanan allowed the first six batters in the second inning to reach. He gave up five singles, three doubles, two home runs, including a grand slam, and two walks in the second inning, while retiring just two batters.
With 11 earned runs in 1 2/3 innings, Buchanan saw his ERA grown from 7.23 to 9.00, falling to 2-7 on the year.
