Pirates' Gerrit Cole already has cool nickname, T-shirt
Pirates phenom Gerrit Cole has yet to make his major-league debut, but he's already an All-Star when it comes to the nickname and fan shirt.
As noted in this space, Pirates top prospect Gerrit Cole, the ballyhooed right-hander out of UCLA, will make his major-league debut on Tuesday against the Giants. Also worth noting is that Cole will wear uniform no. 45 in the bigs.
And those vital bits of information bring us to this ...
Nifty! Let me say I heartily approve, particularly of the nickname. It deftly weaves together name and number and even evokes young Mr. Cole's scouting profile (i.e., he throws hard, trails smoke and possibly smells like gunpowder).
I don't know what's ahead for the young phenom insofar as his actual pitching goes, but he's already doing quite nicely on the nickname front.
