The NL Central-leading Pirates have placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 15-day disabled list because of a contusion and sprain of his right hand. Marte originally sustained the bruise last Sunday when he was struck by a pitch. The sprain is the result of a head-first slide. The Pirates have made the move retroactive to Aug. 19.

As for severity and time-table, the sprain, of course, is the larger concern. On that front, here's Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

This season, the 24-year-old Marte is batting .282/.343/.443 with 35 stolen bases and a majors-leading 10 triples. As well, Marte grades out as an excellent defender in left, so he'll be missed.

To replace Marte on the active roster, the Pirates have recalled Andrew Lambo, who's garnered attention this season for his impressive power numbers in the minors
