Podcast: Fantasy Position Preview - First basemen
The usually deep first base position has more uncertainties than ever this season. Thankfully, the CBSSports fantasy crew can help you sort through the best options at the position.
The usually deep first base position has more uncertainties than ever this season. While there’s still an elite tier of players at the position, the order in which those players are picked may change for the first time in a while.
Some combination of Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Joey Votto are sure to be taken early, but you could make an argument for any of the three to be first overall. Pujols is coming off a down year, by his standards, hitting .285/.343/.516 last year. At age-33, age-related issues will be a concern. Votto was undeniably great but played in only 111 games last year. If he plays a full season, he could emerge as the best of the three options.
Behind those three, there are a ton of question marks. Edwin Encarnacion is coming off a Jose Bautista-like breakout and needs to prove it wasn’t a fluke. The old reliable options at the position -- Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Teixeira and Paul Konerko -- are all at the stage where regression takes hold. And while there are some promising youngsters in Paul Goldschmidt and Anthony Rizzo, you might not be willing to spend a high pick on players with such short track records.
Thankfully, our fantasy crew can help you out. In today’s episode of the podcast, Adam Aizer, Nando di Fino and Al Melchior debate some of the more pressing issues at the position, including:
- Is Albert Pujols still the best option?
- Is Allen Craig a safer pick than Adrian Gonzalez?
- Prince Fielder, overrated?
- Will Anthony Rizzo break out?
- As usual, the team also talks about potential sleepers and busts for the upcoming season.
