Rays announce that outfielder Colby Rasmus is stepping away from baseball
It sounds like Rasmus might miss the rest of the season
The Rays released a statement:
Rays Tampa Bay Times beat writer Marc Topkin further reports that Rasmus isn't expected to return to the team this season.
On the field, he was having a productive offensive season. In just 37 games, Rasmus was hitting .281/.318/.579 with seven doubles, a triple and nine homers.
For the Rays, they'll stick with Mallex Smith in center and Steven Souza in right field. In left, it appears they'll have to continue with the Peter Bourjos/Shane Peterson combo, unless they pick up some help ahead of the trade deadline. Remember, they're contending this season.
