Red Sox, Giants, Braves and others in robust Nick Swisher market
Center field is a hot spot, and so are the corners. After Josh Hamilton, Nick Swisher is seen as the top option by several teams.
While many teams seek a corner outfielder, the market is fairly well-stocked with such players, Josh Hamilton the top guy followed by Swisher, Cody Ross, Delmon Young and Ichiro Suzuki. The Yankees are seen as having a good chance to re-sign Ichiro but have no plans to bring back Swisher.
While Swisher is no match for Hamilton, he has the benefit of having a lower asking price. And while he doesn't have anywhere hear the upside of Hamilton, he may be seen by some as a safer bet.
The Red Sox are said to like Swisher's versatility, as he can play first base as well as the outfield.
The Braves need to add a center fielder (they are targeting B.J. Upton for that) but will also add a corner outfielder or third baseman. The Giants seek a center fielder as well as a corner outfielder, too.
Executives see Swisher getting a deal for perhaps $12 million to $14 million per year.
Swisher batted .272 with 24 home runs and 93 RBI last year. The one knock on him is his career .169 postseason batting average.
