More bad news for the blighted Red Sox, as DH/philosopher-king David Ortiz is bound for the disabled list because of an injured Achilles, WEEI's Alex Speier reports.
Ortiz originally sustained the injury on Monday, but a second opinion was needed before determining his status. Barring setback, he should be able to return after the minimum layoff.
The 36-year-old slugger is in the midst of one of his finest seasons: a slash line of .316/.414/.609, which is good for an AL-leading OPS of 1.024, and 23 home runs to go with 25 doubles. This marks his first trip to the DL since 2008.
To replace Ortiz on the roster, the Sox have called up 27-year-old journeyman Mauro Gomez, who's been crushing the ball for Triple-A Pawtucket.
