Report: Red Sox to call up top prospect Xander Bogaerts
According to one published report, the Red Sox will summon shortstop prospect Xander Bogaerts to join them on their West Coast swing.
WEEI's Alex Speier is reporting that the Red Sox, according to a source, will call up top prospect Xander Bogaerts on Monday.
The 20-year-old Bogaerts, a shortstop and native of Aruba, is batting .297/.388/.477 across Double- and Triple-A this season, and he's putting up those numbers despite being significantly younger than his peer group.
Bogaerts entered the 2013 season ranked as the No. 20 overall prospect by MLB.com and the No. 8 overall prospect by Baseball America. If anything, he has raised his stock with his performance this season. In part, it's Bogaert's substantial promise that allowed the Red Sox to trade Jose Iglesias as part of the three-way deadline deal that brought Jake Peavy to Boston.
As Speier notes, Bogaerts will become the first position player age 20 or younger to be called up by the Sox since Dwight Evans in 1972.
The Red Sox begin a three-game road series with the Giants on Monday, and then, after an off day on Thursday, visit the magma-hot Dodgers for a three-game weekend set.
