By the sounds of it, Roger Clemens will not be pitching for the Astros again. He will, however, be teaching pitching in some capacity for the Astros. Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle quotes Astros GM Jeff Luhow as saying this about Clemens' anticipated return to the organization: "We’ve got the whole calendar mapped out, and we’re going to sort of figure out what makes sense. But the idea is to plug him in in spring training, plug him in throughout the season and just have him get a lot more involved with our pitchers."
The "throughout the season" part of Luhnow's comments suggests that this is going to be something more than the usual "spring-training instructor" gig that so many franchise stalwarts dip their toes into from time to time. And, yes, the Astros already have a pitching coach.
Regardless of what you think of Clemens, his greatness is unassailable. And while greatness doesn't necessarily imply an ability to impart knowledge, there's no harm in exposing young pitchers to the wisdom of an all-time great.
