Royals, Joe Blanton agree to minor-league deal

The Royals and pitcher Joe Blanton have agreed to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The team later confirmed.

Blanton last pitched in the majors in 2013 for the Angels, posting a 2-14 record with a 6.04 ERA with 108 strikeouts in 132 2/3 innings. In 2014, Blanton played with the Athletics Triple-A team the Sacramento River Cats, where he made two starts.

If he makes it to the majors, Blanton will make $1 million. It also has $3 million in incentives and Blanton can request his release if not on the major league roster on April 1 and May 15, according to Heyman.
