Ryan Dempster to return Sunday
Cubs ace Ryan Dempster is slated to return from the disabled list in time to start Sunday against the Mets.
Cubs ace Ryan Dempster, who hasn't pitched since June 15 because of an injured lat muscle behind his throwing shoulder, will return from the disabled list in time to face the Mets on Sunday, reports Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com.
Dempster, who has a 2.11 ERA in 81.0 innings this season, figures to be a coveted commodity leading to the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline. As such, the Cubs are certainly hoping he turns in a strong performance in his first start back. He'll be restricted to a pitch count of about 80 on Sunday.
The 35-year-old Demspter, who's owed the balance of a $14-million salary for 2012, is eligible for free agency at season's end. He also has a no-trade clause.
