CLEVELAND -- Have you heard about the upcoming World Series being a rare matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians? No? You're in good luck, because we can fill you in.
The Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908. They haven't been there since 1945.
The Indians haven't won the World Series since 1948. They haven't been there since 1997.
Now that we're all caught up, check this out. There's a gofundme page set up in an effort to help get a World War II (specifically, Pearl Harbor) veteran named Jim Schlegel to Wrigley Field for one of the World Series games. He's 97 years old and still has the ticket stubs to Games 6 and 7 of the '45 Fall Classic.
The description on the gofundme page:
My Grandpa is 97 years old. He served in Pearl Harbor and is the BIGGEST Cubs fan I know. He had the opportunity to go see the Cubs in 1945 World Series Game 7 and still has the original ticket stubs. He has been waiting since that heartbreaking day, to see the Cubs in World Series. Please help my Grandpa witness the Cubs in the World Series again.
As of this writing, the donations are climbing toward $8,000 and, given the ticket prices on the secondary market, every bit of the $10,000 goal will be needed. If there is excess, the remaining funds will be donated to the Purple Heart Foundation.
If nothing else, we can all tell Mr. Schlegal thanks for his service.
