We take you to Detroit, where the Tigers on Sunday were ritually abused by the magma-hot Indians (CLE 11, DET 1). As part of the festivities, Cleveland purveyor of extra-base hits Jose Ramirez smote a ball deep to left field where Motown fly-catcher Mikie Mahtook attempted to play it off the top of the wall. As you're about to see, Mahtook was thereupon hoisted by his own petard ...

All right. Presumably, Mahtook's idea was to go for the barehanded snare and maybe cut down Ramirez going for second base. In execution, it looks like he was going for a put-back, one-handed jam. Either way, he fecklessly swatted the ball over the fence for a Cleveland home run. Ah well.

Are we done? No, we're not done. It sort of happened again in the sixth ...

Glove-aided dinger? It appears so, people.

Thanks in part to the two outfielder-aided home runs, Ramirez had himself quite a day at the ballpark Sunday. He went 5 for 5 with three doubles and two home runs. He's only the 10th player in history with five extra-base hits in the game. The list:

  • Jose Ramirez, Indians: Three doubles and two homers on Aug. 3, 2017
  • Kris Bryant, Cubs: Two doubles and three homers on June 27, 2016
  • Jackie Bradley Jr., Red Sox: Three doubles and two homers on Aug. 15, 2015
  • Josh Hamilton, Rangers: One double and four homers on May 8, 2012
  • Kelly Shoppach, Indians: Three doubles and two homers on July 30, 2008
  • Shawn Green, Dodgers: One double and four homers on May 23, 2002
  • Steve Garvey, Dodgers: Three doubles and two homers on Aug. 28, 1977
  • Willie Stargell, Pirates: Three doubles and two homers on Aug. 1, 1970
  • Joe Adcock, Braves: One double and four homers on July 31, 1954
  • Lou Boudreau, Indians: Four doubles and one homer on July 14, 1946

Ramirez raised his season batting line from .303/.356/.531 to .310/.362/.554 on Sunday. It's not easy to add 29 points to your OPS in one day in September, but Ramirez managed to do it with some help from the Tigers.

The good news for Detroit is that they've torn in all down, and losses are more beneficial to them right now than wins. On that front, the outfield on Sunday served the long-term interests of the franchise by helping the opposition hit a pair homers. Yay!
