Tim Lincecum to the bullpen?
The Giants have discussed transitioning erstwhile ace Tim Lincecum to a relief role, at least until his struggles subside.
Courtesy of Will Brinson of the Cove comes this nugget regarding struggling Giants "ace" Tim Lincecum:
Bruce Bochy went on Sirius XM Radio on Tuesday and told former GM Jim Bowden that the possibility of moving "The Freak" to the bullpen and/or skipping one of his starts has been discussed.Skipping one of Lincecum's turns is non-drastic enough, but a move to the bullpen? That would be a bold step indeed.
It's easy to understand the Giants' sense of desperation, though: Lincecum this season has a 6.00 ERA after 13 starts, and he's posting what will easily be the worst walk rate of his career. Also discouraging are Lincecum's velocity trends over the last several seasons (courtesy of FanGraphs) ...
It's not certain what's wrong with Lincecum, but it's likely that something's not right with the two-time Cy Young winner. Perhaps a move to the pen, where he'd likely experience a boost in velocity and performance, will help him.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, and all that.
