Top prospect Jedd Gyorko on the verge of winning Padres 2B job
Gyorko has satisfied Padres decisionmakers that he can make the switch from third base to second with his play this spring.
Top Padres prospect Jedd Gyorko has played himself into the team's lineup and is about to win the starting second-base job.
While the Padres haven't officially named Gyorko the starting second baseman yet, word is that team higherups are satisfied he can make the switch from third base, so barring something unforeseen, he will begin the year as the team's everyday second baseman.
Gyorko, considered one of the top third base prospects in the game, was tried at second this spring thanks to the presence of star third baseman Chase Headley, the Padres' best player.
Gyorko, 24, hit .311 with 30 home runs and a .547 slugging percentage between stops at Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson in 2012, and is expected to give a major boost to San Diego's lineup. There's been a concern about the likely lineup productivity early with starting catcher Yasmani Grandal missing the first 50 games due to a PED suspension, but Nick Hundley has helped allay those fears to some degree with his very nice spring.
Gyorko, a second-round pick in 2010, has raised hopes, as well, hitting three home runs, garnering nine RBI and most importantly playing a good enough second base that Padres people haven't been dissuaded that he can do the job. Gyorko was named the best third baseman in Triple-A last year. Logan Forsythe, who did a nice job for the Padres last year, has been the Padres' other main second baseman in camp.
